Gold Tango 0

Melbourne’s Gold Tango released their debut EP late last year, and I’m really bummed I haven’t heard it yet. The first single Telescope, is a killer downbeat keyboard jam, that sounds more 80’s pop on junk than the twee indie stuff that you’d usually here from this kind of sound. I love how this track keeps building but still maintains its slow moving pop-drone the whole way.

EP available now from the wonderful EXO Records.

White Woods 0

WHITEWOODS

This is so fucking good. Melbourne’s White Woods are doing a kind of drugged out garage sound that is so familiar, but somehow highly unique. The album is a huge journey through all kinds of garage/psych, shoegaze, and even no-wave-jam kinda paradises. I’ve only had a couple of listens and I already know i’m going to be playing this all year.

Groundswell is track 6 of 7 on this excellent record. Also go to their myspace and check out Ballet Tea and a live version of their nine minute album closer Backyard Blues.

Available soon on Sensory Projects.

Pageants 0

pageants

Some new stuff from Melbourne’s Pageants this week, from yet another brilliant Sensory Projects signing.

I’m really digging the lo-fi pop vibe on Drink The World, it reminds me of all the great stuff coming out of the states at the moment, but with a distinctly Melbourne flavour.

Their EP Forbidden Delicious will be out soon. You should definitely buy it.

Love Connection’s debut self-titled album is out tomorrow (Jan 30) on Sensory Projects. I’m listening to it right now, and damn its just brilliant. Loose, trancy indie pop with a lot of heart. Don’t be fooled by the lead single I Know You’re Real, things get a lot weirder…. you’ll find yourself off with the fairies in no time. My favourite so far, Trilogy, clocks in at 6:23 and is posted here for your listening pleasure. There’s a distinct innocence to this album that is really uplifting.

Bird Blobs 0

birdblobs

Here’s a blast from the past….well from 5 years ago or so anyway (holy shit time is flying). Melbourne’s Bird Blobs smashed and bloodied their way through the Australian music scene and then broke up not long after releasing their self titled album. What a shame.

Billy is the opening track from the album and is text book Bird Blobs…eerie and thrashy guitars, dirty and driving bass + drums and Tim Evans’ trademark distorted vocals. Live, they were a loud, messy, and amazing thing to witness.

Check out this quote from Mess And Noise…gives you a good idea of what you’re in for: The band itself was named after a painting one of Evans friends painted whilst high on acid. He killed himself not long after. The artwork, Bird Blobs was immortalized forever as the bands reason for being.

No website or myspace seems to be in existence, but there are still “limited copies” of the album available from Unstable Ape.

Mum Smokes 0

Jazz Tiger by Mum Smokes is a little bit pop, a little bit psychedelic & little bit punk…and a whole lot of awesome. It’s got those beautiful sounding 60’s garage drums, excellent guitar sounds and even better trip out synth sounds. It all comes together very nicely. Enjoyable indeed.

Jazz Tiger is from their debut album Rainbows, Chasms & Fantasies out now on Sensory Projects. Or you can get it on their myspace here.

Melbourne’s Love Connection are doing some great feeling indie pop a little different to everyone else. I love the dual/group vocals on I Know You’re Real, which give the track a kind of haunting feeling underneath everything that works really well. Check it out.

I Know You’re Real single launch is on 6pm 24th October at The Evelyn in Melbourne. $10 gets you Love Connection, Rat Vs Possum, The Parking Lot Experiments, Tantrums, Psuche, Milk Teddy and Dj’s and a free copy of the single.

Album out early 2010 on Sensory Projects.
