FRANZFERDINAND

Luna Park’s Big Top is one of the worst venues i’ve ever attended. Big stale room full of security guards, wristbands and crowd barriers *shudder*, but it didn’t stop me from enjoying Franz Ferdinand last night.

If you’re like me and tend to get into bands 10 years too late, or stray completely away from the hype of massive bands like this, then maybe you should have a closer listen. FF have written some of the last decade’s most classic tunes.

Take Me Out had 2000 people jumping in unison and it reminded me whats so great about this band, amazingly well written, ridiculously catchy songs that have a lot of groove and a lot of style.

I just couldn’t believe no one cared when they played their cover of LCD Soundsystem’s All My Friends… i almost had a heart attack when they started playing it.

Trish from No Art has kindly told us her top 5 most played songs in iTunes / music player of her choice….for our first ever TOP FIVES. More bands to come soon!

///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

1. “Don’t Explain” by Nina Simone

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I tend to play Nina Simone at parties. This happens a lot, particularly when no one is interested, and I’m not sorry for it. If I could track down her cover of Feelings, that would definitely be #1, but for now that’s restricted to my YouTube top 5.

2. “12 Plus Harsh Tanz” by Teeth Mountain

Another track for get-togethers. This works best if you light candles and hand around tambourines, shakers, and pots and pans first. I promise it will never fail you.

3. “My Daddy Rocks Me” by Trixie Smith

I only found this little ditty about a month and a half ago, so it’s been a quick climb to the top. I’d really like to know how this one goes down in awkward moments of sexual tension, if anyone’s game.

4. “The Long and Winding Road” by The Beatles

I’m not a Beatles person so I don’t want to get into any lengthy discussions about who wrote what best. Including them on this list at all is an unfortunate compromise of my usual policy. But the truth is I can listen to this romantic ballad for hours on end.

5. “Oukha Dial Kheir” by Cheikh Ayyad ou Haddou and ensemble

Three minutes of Arabic chanting, yes please. Singing along makes it about 14 times as fun. I think you can track down the compilation that this comes from on UbuWeb – it’s Arabic-inspired music meets audio book. Pure gold.

Vivian Girls 0

Vivian Girls were a lot of fun at Spectrum last night. All noisy, thrashy and yet also sunny & breezy, almost skate-punk feeling garage pop… Broken strings, smashing tambourines on guitars, instrument swapping while jamming mid song, feedback, dancing, jumping around in the crowd…yep, good times indeed. When I’m Gone was my favourite for the night.

They’re doing a 2nd Sydney show at The Hopetoun on Sunday 4th October…don’t miss it. And a lot of other shows around Australia still left…check out their myspace for dates. Thanks to Mistletone for bringing out yet another amazing band.

Joysticks are the best new young Sydney band i’ve heard. Purple Berries is a new demo from them, and is a bit of a departure from their usual post punk / new wave type stuff that they do. It’s still them, but sounds more Australian desert than london nightclub, and is indeed very unique. It’s gonna be amazing seeing what these guys come up with in the future.

They’re about 1000 x better live too…not that the recordings are shit, its just that they are actually really good live. See it for yourself at their upcoming Sydney shows…

Thurs 24th Sept – Hopetoun Hotel supp. Devoted Few
Sun 4th Oct – Parklife Festival, The Woods stage
Sat 10th Oct – Filth Fest, Annandale Hotel

Brain Slaves 0

Brain Slaves have recently made the move from NZ to Sydney and after cancelling their first Sydney show due to illness, they are finally making their Sydney live debut at Spectrum this Wednesday night 16th September.

Really different NZ style wacked out pop with a bit of a UK indie feel…. We’re All Lions is five-and-a-half-minutes of what sounds like nitrous party / journey goodness…sit down, turn up & enjoy.

Tennis
have been kicking around Sydney for a little while now, but according to their myspace they are finally recording their debut EP. Its going to be very interesting to see how it turns out.

There certainly hasn’t been a shortage of post punk bands in the last few years, but these guys are doing things very differently. They played their first show in a Sydney strip club, how can you NOT listen to them after hearing that?
